Works like a charm! July 29, 2010 B. Nagel Got the 2-meal feeder so I can feed my kitties at a decent hour when I know I'll be late coming home. I've used it a handful of times now and I think it works as it's supposed to. Don't know how "off" the timing is for the 2 chambers to open simultaneously because it's a simple crank mechanism that is just an estimate of the releasing time. But that's ok for me.
Two issues that were easy fixes: the AA battery on the bottom needs to be dug out with a butter knife because there's no ribbon attached to help it out. (There's no on/off switch, so you need to take the battery out each time. I store the battery right in the feeder.) I made a loose ribbon loop to place around the battery before inserting it into the well, and then it's easy to pop it out. Yay!
I was also worried about kitty acne from eating out of the included plastic dishes, so I went to the dollar store and bought 2 square glass ashtrays that were an uncannily perfect fit.
All in all, this has been a wonderful device so my cats don't starve, or start trying to feed themselves out of the garbage can.
I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.
works great, my cat and I get along much better now July 28, 2010 Joel Reish Really have high praise for this auto feeder. This product solved two problems at once for me:
- My cat needs measured amounts of food doled out several times a day, and this auto feeder does it perfectly.
- My cat used to be underfoot and meowing her head off every time I went near the kitchen. Didn't matter what I was doing (opening mail, putting dishes away, whatever), to her I was near the food so she felt maybe she was getting fed. This would annoy me to no end. Now with this auto feeder, pretty quickly my cat learned that, in effect, I don't feed her anymore, so she doesn't follow me around and meow at me constantly. Within a day she learned to associate the sound of the feeder's motor whirring with "feeding time."
Now, she is being fed on a very regular schedule that I only have to pay attention to once a day, and her behavior and dynamics in the household have improved as a result.
The only negative I can see to this auto feeder is the comments of some others that their pet figured out how to rotate the dish and get at the food waiting for future feedings. I read a lot of the customer reviews and it seemed to me that about 4 out of 5 love this product and about 1 out of 5 give it a very low rating because of this one issue. So clearly there is a real issue with some pets being able to figure out how to turn the dish, but it appears to be a small minority. I was concerned that my cat would figure it out but didn't.
To clarify, the dish does not spin freely with no resistance, it does have a little resistance because turning the dish means you are turning the gear of the motor. So it's enough resistance to stop an accidental nudge from a nose, but I can see that it won't stop a smart and determined animal that is pushing on it to get at food.
Loud, but it works very well July 23, 2010 wendyv (Monument, CO) The PetSafe 5-Meal feeder works very well. It is rather loud when the dish turns and I have it in my bedroom so I definitely hear it at 5:00 a.m. I took a tip from another review and I now feed my cat smaller portions 3 times a day. This has actually kept him satisfied but decreased the total amount of food he is eating. He needs to lose a little bit of weight since he is a very healthy 21-lb boy :) I did have some trouble with the instruction label that is on the inside of the cover. The top left corner was not sticking well and it would impede movement of the bowl at feeding time. I had to rip the label off to stop the problem. I just don't have written instructions now, but other than that I am satisfied.
My Corgi broke this cheap feeder the first time July 20, 2010 San Diego Do not waste your money on this feeder. It is cheap plastic even though it looks sturdy in the pictures. I only used it once as my smart Corgi figured out which compartment had the food and broke it open ruining the feeder and costing me over $30.00. It is a complete waste of money. The 5 feeder one from the same company looks even cheaper. If you have a smart dog, a chewer or a bigger dog, this will not last more then a day or two. I would say it might only work for a dumb dog like a Dalmation.
Life Saver! July 18, 2010 Heather At first I was on the fence about spending the money for this product but now I know it's worth every cent. My cat Daisy is big boned & seems to always be hungry, especially at 2am, 3am & 430am...you get the picture. I was at my wits end because of the constant begging. The meowing, the charging, the licking ...anything possible to make me want to kill her or just feed her so I could get some sleep! This product has helped so much by her not associating me with feeding her as much. Daisy now associates the pet feeder with food & it keeps her on schedule. There are times where she will still act up but nothing compared to what I had to deal with before. Another plus with this product is being able to go away for a night & not have to worry about her. If I left a huge portion of food to last the time I was gone Daisy aka Jabba would have gorged herself right away then had no food until I arrived back home. I highly recommend this product & hope it relieves others as it has me. Now I can enjoy my "little" bundle of fur & not want to make slippers out of her. lol.
